“The Dance of the Nain Rouge” is an experimental documentary that blends dance, deepfake, and Detroit demonology with a decolonial approach. It is inspired by the legend of the Nain Rouge (“Red Dwarf”), a shapeshifting native being who, according to folklore, was brutally attacked by xenophobic colonizers and has since appeared dancing as an omen of victorious uprisings by the oppressed — such as Chief Pontiac’s victory in 1763 and the 1967 Detroit Rebellion.
